Travelling can be expensive, especially if you are taking off to luxurious destinations on the other side of the world. But even when you’ve already paid for your travel and accommodation for those who are not travelling far and looking for a cheaper holiday, it seems there’s always a way you get stung for extra money, somehow, no matter how much planning and budgeting were involved. It can really put a damper on your holiday when you end up spending a lot more money than you intended. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Here are our tips on how you can save money on your next overseas adventure and minimise extra costs. Get Travel Insurance… The first thing you should do after you’ve booked your holiday is to also book travel insurance as well. If you have a medical or dental emergency overseas, it could end up costing you anything from thousands to millions of dollars in medical and hospital expenses. Also, if your belongings are lost or stolen or you have cancellation costs extra you could be left out of pocket if you do not have insurance to protect you in these situations. Don’t Exchange Your Money at the Airport If you need to exchange money to the country you are heading to, don’t leave it to the last minute at the airport. The rates you get are bound to be far worse than what you would have been able to get elsewhere before your trip. It’s a good idea to talk to your bank before you leave and see what their international rates are and see if they offer a travel money card option, which is often cheaper than the rates of a credit card. Weigh Your Luggage … Even if your luggage is only a couple of kilogrammes heavier than your airline has allowed for, it can still end up being a costly experience for you. You should always check how much you’re allowed to bring beforehand and weigh your bag before you get to the airport to ensure you’re not going to be charged extra. Also, if you need to bring extra luggage purchase it before your trip, not when you get to the airport. You’ll save money by pre-purchasing it beforehand. Pack Your Lunch & Entertainment … Budget airlines often are able to provide lower fares by cutting out things that aren’t essential for your trip. For instance, things that are normally provided for you with other airlines such as food, alcohol, entertainment, ear plugs, blankets etc come at a cost on a cheaper airline and may even end up costing you more all up. So pack your lunch and some books or even a movie on your laptop and a scarf to keep you warm when the cabin cools down, or at the least pay for them beforehand instead of on the day as it will be cheaper that way. Pack All The Essentials Try and pack all the essentials you’ll need so you don’t end up paying through the roof for them at the airport or hotel. Don’t forget sunscreen, toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo & conditioner, soap, ear plugs, face mask, universal point, phone chargers etc. If you have forgotten something try and wait till you’re away from the airport or hotel as it will be cheaper to buy somewhere else. See if Your Phone Carrier Offers a deal You know what gets expensive? Overseas roaming charges. You should check with your carrier before you leave to see what sort of offers they have. Some companies charge as little as five dollars per day to use your mobile like you would back home but the rates of others are much higher. If so decide whether you really need to use your mobile whilst your away. Most places have Wifi and that’s all you really need to stay in contact with everyone from home. Avoid Eating & Drinking At Your Hotel We know it’s convenient after a long day travelling on a flight, but try and avoid eating and drinking at your hotel as much as possible. In fact, anywhere around the airport or hotel will far more expensive. If you can try and avoid all the touristy areas and eat where the locals eat, where you’ll get amazing food for and drink for a quarter of the price. Taking off on an adventure of a lifetime?
